Toyota is recalling 427 model year 2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured from November 24, 2011 through December 19, 2011. In the curtain shield airbags, propellant with the incorrect specification was used for the initiator assembled in the airbag inflator. In this condition, the inflator may not perform properly, causing one or both curtain shield airbags to not deploy. In the event of a crash, the airbags may not deploy and will not be able to properly protect an occupant, increasing the risk of injuries. The safety recall is expected to begin early March 2012. 12V-029.

Chrysler is recalling 5,334 model year 2008-2012 right hand drive (RHD) Jeep Wrangler vehicles manufactured from February 1, 2007 through October 10, 2011. Some vehicles may be equipped with driver’s airbag clockspring assemblies that could experience a compromised airbag circuit resulting in an airbag lamp illumination, which indicates that the airbag may not deploy. A broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver frontal airbag and will not be able to properly protect the driver in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injuries.11v-528.

The Office of Defect Investigations had received 29 consumer complaints of airbag light illumination and/or clockspring failure on model years 2007-2008 jeep wrangler. Twenty-three of the 29 complaints specifically identified the airbag clockspring wiring assembly as the source of the issue. The remaining six complaints referenced only the airbag light being illuminated. Among the fourteen owners contacted, six stated that they owned a right hand drive version of the vehicle typically used by postal carriers. Sixteen of the 29 complaints were received since January 1, 2011. A broken electrical circuit in the airbag clockspring wiring assembly can lead to non-deployment of the driver side frontal airbag. PE11-019.

Hyundai is recalling 205,233 model year 2007-2008 Hyundai Veracruz vehicles manufactured from December 26, 2006 through March 21, 2008, and model year 2007-2008 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicles manufactured from April 19, 2006 through March 20, 2008. The clock spring contact assembly for the driver’s air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) may become damaged through usage over time. The driver’s air bag electrical circuit will experience a high resistance condition, potentially causing the driver’s air bag to not deploy. If the clock spring develops high resistance, in the event of a crash, the drivers air bag will not deploy and will not be able to properly protect the driver, increasing the risk of injuries. The safety recall is expected to begin during September 2011. 11V-472.

Kia is recalling 10,631 model year 2007-2008 Kia Sorento passenger cars manufactured from June 15, 2006 through November 27, 2007. Kia reports that for vehicles built prior to the software update of 11/27/2007, the vehicles can improperly classify an adult as a child restraint seat and thus illuminate the “airbag off” warning light and suppress the frontal passenger airbag. On May 12, 2009, Kia launched a technical service bulletin (SB076) campaign to “re-flash” all vehicles built prior to the 11/27/2007 production date.

The front passenger air bag may be turned off when an adult is in the passenger seat. The front passenger air bag is designed to be turned off in limited circumstances including when children and small adults are seated in the front passenger seat, there is a child restraint in that seat, or the seat is not occupied. The vehicle’s occupant classification system (OCS), which classifies the occupant in the front passenger seat, may misclassify an adult passenger as a child or child seat and improperly turn off the passenger side air bag. When the air bag is deactivated, the “passenger air bag off” light will illuminate on the center instrument panel. The passenger side air bag is turned off when the OCS misclassifies an adult passenger. With the front passenger airbag off, the front passenger will not have the protection of the passenger air bags in some frontal collisions, thus increasing the risk of occupant injury.11V-473.

Honda is recalling 2,430 model year 2001-2002 Honda Accord, and Honda Civic 2-door and 4-door, model year 2002-2003 Honda CR-V, model year 2002 Honda Odyssey, model year 2003 Acura CL, and model year 2002-2003 Acura TL vehicles. This recall is related to a series of recalls on these vehicles in which Honda is replacing the inflators within the driver’s side air bag to address a defective condition.

This recall addresses approximately 2,430 air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts in the event. For example, a covered vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the driver’s air bag, and the replacement air bag installed was one that may have contained a defective inflator. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver’s air bag, the inflator could produce excessive internal pressure that could cause the inflator to rupture with metal fragments striking and injuring the driver or other occupants. The safety recall is expected to begin on or about June 27, 2011. 11V-260.

Hyundai is recalling 65,226 model year 2006 through 2009 Hyundai Azera vehicles manufactured from September 27, 2005 through October 1, 2008. The wiring harness for the right front seat belt tension sensor may sustain damage after repeated use of the seat belt. If the seat belt tension sensor wiring becomes damaged, it will not communicate with the Passive Occupant Detection System (PODS). This defect may cause recording of Diagnostic Trouble Code B1495 (Belt Tension Sensor Defect) and also possibly B1489 (PODS ECU Defect). If the wire becomes damaged, the air bag will not deploy in the event of a crash requiring front air bag deployment. The seat occupant is at an increased risk of injury should the air bag not deploy as intended.

Hyundai first made changes to its production lines to re-route the wiring harness and to increase the space between the inner sill and lower B-pillar trim. Later, based on replacement of seat belt assemblies from consumer’s cars, Hyundai determined that a safety recall should be conducted. The safety recall is expected to begin during February 2010. Hyundai’s recall campaign number is 094. NHTSA recall number 09V-497.

A left and/or right A-pillar trim cover clip may not have been manufactured correctly, allowing the A-pillar trim to become loose when the sideguard head protection airbags deploy during a crash. If this happens, a loose trim piece could injure the front seat occupants of the vehicle. Although the problem apparently surfaced during crash tests conducted in the spring and summer of 2009, VW/Audi did not notify the government until December 2009. The safety recall is expected to begin during January 2010. 09V-484.

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed a new federal rule that is intended to reduce the risk of being ejected during a rollover accident. That proposed rule would require car companies to pass testing that evaluates the risk that a person would be ejected out a side window during a rollover crash. The government expects that most car companies would meet that standard by adding improved side curtain air bags and also potentially by using laminated glazing (layered glass/plastic/glass) similar to what is used in windshields.

Although side curtain air bags are present in many vehicles today, not all of those are triggered during rollover wrecks. There are several differences between curtain air bags that deploy only in side crashes and curtain air bags that deploy in rollover crashes. The rollover-triggered air bags obviously require sensors to detect that a rollover is occuring. Such rollover sensors were available on nearly 100 models by the 2007 model year.

The rollover air bags also have to stay inflated longer: although side impacts may last less than a second, rollovers can last several seconds. So, rollover air bags need to stay inflated longer. This is often accomplished by using a colder gas to inflate the air bag, because colder gas does not leak out as quickly. The rollover air bag fabric is often coated as well, again to make sure the gas does not leak out as quickly.

Additionally, some of today’s side curtain air bags do not extend to the bottom of the windows; this means that some people, particularly small children, can still be ejected even if the curtain air bag is deployed. NHTSA anticipates that the rollover curtain air bags required to pass the proposed testing would need to extend downward from the roof to cover the entire window.

Finally, in order to keep the bottom of these curtain air bags in position during the entire rollover impact, it is quite possible that the air bag would need to be tethered (or anchored) near the bottom of the window. Often, this is accomplished through tethers to the bottom of the pillars that support the roof on sides of the vehicle.

NHTSA estimates that the their proposal would add only about $34 per vehicle, compared to the car companies’ current plans. That is a small price to pay to save someone’s life or to prevent catastrophic injuries that will last a lifetime.
