Recalls are one of those areas where the government's files can be very helpful to figuring out who knew what, when. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes many of its defect investigation and recall files available for public viewing and downloading. Those can be very helpful in finding out when the car company first knew about the defect, and how and when they responded. You'll be amazed how frequently there is a very long period of time between the first reported safety problem and when the car company finally issues a recall for that safety defect.
