Dodge Airbag Failed to Deploy

The driver of a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was involved in a single-vehicle accident.  The front of the Dodge pickup struck a large tree, causing significant damage to the vehicle.

However, the driver airbag failed to deploy.  As a result of the airbag non-deployment, the driver suffered fatal blunt chest trauma injuries.

Our investigation also revealed that Chrysler had received hundreds and hundreds of complaints from other consumers indicating that the airbags had failed to deploy in their pickup trucks too.  This case focused on the lack of an air bag sensor at the front of the pickup, even though previous models of the pickup had used such a front sensor.  Our research also revealed that the Dodge pickup truck’s existing sensor was not calibrated properly for the vehicle’s structure, allowing it to be “fooled” especially in crashes involving trees and utility poles.

My 05 Dodge Ram Quad Cab hit a retaining wall almost head on. The entire front of the bumper impacted an interstate retaining wall from the middle to the far left side at 55 miles an hour. The air bags didn’t deploy. I hit the wall bounced off did a 540 and came to a stop blocking all three lanes of traffic. The engine had died. The impact was so hard it buckled the frame. The seat belt did lock though so I walked away without a scratch.

Thanks for your input. In my opinion, Dodge pickups have had significant problems with airbag non-deployments in crashes during which consumers expect their airbags to deploy. I encourage you and other consumers to report this problem both to Chrysler and to the federal agency who monitors such issues, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The more people complain, the more likely it is that something will be done about this.

I was recently involved in a t-bone type collision. The airbag did not deploy. I am not sure if it should have or not. I was driving a 2001 dodge intrepid. The woman who hit me was driving at 40-45 mph. I have spoken with several people whose airbags did not work in similar crashes.

  5. p says:

My fiancee and I were just involved in front-end crash.
My 2005 Dodge Dakota Quad-cab’s air-bags did deploy on either side.
Have their been any other Dakota’s with this problem?

  6. Richard says:

I just had a collision at 25mph into a parked car. I have a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and airbag failed to deploy on it.

  7. John says:

My wife was struck by a 06 camry traveling 50 miles an hour head on into our 08 dodge ram 1500 4×4 and the air bags did not deploy. This can’t be correct.

  8. darlene says:

On Dec 20, 2009 I also slid and hit a tree head on. We drive a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4. The driver air bag DID NOT deploy. I fractured several bones in my face, ribs and fractured vertebraes in my back that required immediate surgery. My recovered is expected to take 6 weeks. The truck was totalled by the insurance company. We are having a Chrysler Rep come in to see the vehicle and try to figure out why the air bag did not deploy. This is a very seriours defect and needs to be addressed soon, so no one else is hurt because of this defect.

  9. Kathleen says:

Just days before my husband deployed for again he was t-boned in our 6 week ownership Dodge Ram 1500 and the airbag did not deploy either and the wheel was completely broke off the axle. I was seriously worried that the airbags didnt’ deploy what if it had been an even worst wreck.. Aren’t they suppose to deploy? how is that safe?

  10. Jonathan says:

I was just involved in a head on collision two days ago. due to the severe snow we have been having in the area. the other vehicle involved in the accident deployed its front airbags but my 04 dodge dakota did not. speed was minimal due to the weather but was still great enough to warrent airbags to deploy.

  11. rodney says:

just hit a tree in my 02 dakota 4×4 head on and the airbags DID NOT DEPLOY

  12. Nick says:

I was driving a 2005 dodge ram 1500 night runner edition regular cabb 4×4 and I hit a guard rail at about 25-35 mph, the car was sent airborne landing on the driver side door then rolled twice down a hill and neither of my airbags deployed

  13. Jim says:

concrete retaining wall – vs – 1999 Ram 1500.. the truck lost. No airbag deployment. passenger side was turned off, but was hard enough hit to total front end of truck.. at least 30-35 mph, but hard to say exactly much had slowed down from 50mph as evasive manoevers were more important at the time than looking at the speedo. Steering column out-of-whack & doesnt shift properly which tells me of probable frame damage in addition to obvious bent radiator core support mounting point. I can fix most of it myself, although the cost may be more than I could buy another one for ( we’d just switched to liability-only ) but more unnerving is the fact that the bag didnt deploy… I’m still very sore, and we have several identical trucks that I no longer feel very secure in. If I still worked for Dodge/Dodge Dealers as I did most of my life.. I’d seriously be making like miserable for somebody at this point. To see the extent of this problem is pretty disgusting and between it, and the epidemic problems with the dash assemblies falling apart on these trucks (creating another huge safety issue) they SHOULD be accountable. Where’s that worthless “Doctor Z” when ya need him ? I dont know if this is the result, but I think it was unanimous that things were going downhill when Bob Eaton got stupid and made a “merger” with Daimler… but the rest of my comments regarding the last dozen years’ safety concerns are basically unprintable in a public forum.

  14. Lisa says:

I just got in head on collision at 50 mph in my 2007 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. NO AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT on either side. Thank god for seat belts. I walked away with a sore shoulder an a bump on the head from the steering wheel. The whole front end was hit why would the airbags not deploy. This is a huge safety issue!

  15. Mark says:

My step daughter was involved in a major accident in Ca.
She fell asleep at the wheel and hit a tree at high speed.
It almost killed her. She was in a Dodge 2001 1500 4×4 where the drivers side airbag did not fully deploy. I told her not to buy a Dodge! Hopefully she learned that now!
There are enough complaints on this website alone that there should be some sort of Class action Lawsuit!
I do not want to re-live the details, but people need to be aware of this problem that is obviously is being swept under the carpet by Dodge!!!!

  16. Justina says:

I recently lost control in my 2002 Dodge Durango due to slippery roads and hit a cement median going 60mph. The airbag did not deploy and the seatbelt did not lock. I took the steering wheel to the chest and was in the hospital for 2 days due to heart problems and was out of work for 3 weeks! I would have been fine if the airbag would have deployed!

  17. Rich says:

My 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 was totaled when a vehicle hit me head on after they crossed lanes in to me. I have a broken neck at c7. My wife has severe brusing , tendon , ligament and severe soft tissue damage.

  18. Paul says:

1998 Ram 1500 Quad Cab totaled, hit by a spinning Toyota Truck bouncing off center wall at more than 65 MPH, I was doing 55-60 in the rain. more than 10K in damages to front including frame, brain concussion and extension & compression injuries thank god for safety belts.

  19. Chi Chi says:

On Dec. 11. 2010 I had a head on collision with a driver who crossed by red. Also it was front end damage to the Dodge Ram 1500 year 2006, the Airbags did NOT deployed. Than I was standing at a red light and got hit from the back on Dec.15. 2010 from a driver with the speed of 60+ miles and the impact hit the standing SUV infront of me with a force that my whole front end was damaged. The Airbags did NOT deployed. I suffer from severe Spine injuries, neck injuries and hip injuries. ligament injuries The Seatbelt did NOT locked in. My truck was totaled.
I will have extensive Rehab, P.T. and 2 surgeries coming up. Failure to my legs because of pinched nerves.
The company of Dodge/Chrysler has sent me letter that they have tested my truck and saw that there where no collision in the front end. Ha, All a lie, pictures speaks more than any excuses from them.

  20. HK says:

I was involved in a accident yesterday in a dodge ram 1500 and a pole, I was the passenger and the airbag was turned off on my side but it did deploy on the drivers side, the seat belts did lock. The truck is totaled, there is no front left. The seat belt probably saved me from having serious injury or even my life! They need to fix this problem!

  21. Ebony says:

My husband was involved this Friday in a head-on. His 2009 Dodge Ram Airbag did not deploy. He had seatbelt on and it didnot lock. The Truck appear to be Total, we’re not sure yet. He was diagnosed w/Concussion at ER and received awful deep cuts/bruising to his head, neck. He really needed the airbag for support but it failed him. We bought the truck brand new off Lot the latter part of 2009.

  22. James says:

I was involved in an accident while driving my 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT. I was in the hospital for 21 days with 17 of those days were in ICU with 5 broken ribs, broken hip and head injuries. Neither of the airbags deployed.I recieved a letter from the Customer Claims Resolution Group at The Chrysler Company, stating that after investigating, it was determined that “The impact which did not sighificantly involved the frame did not create the longitudinal (front to back) deceleration necessary to deploy the airbags.” The frame was bent and my van was totaled.

  23. marc says:

I t-bones a 06 acura mdx with my 06 mega cab at 40 mph, 0 airbag deployment! Everything deployed on the mdx and he was only backing up….

  24. NDB says:

Well for all of you guys who lived through your bad experiences I am happy that another life was not taken. My husband was not so lucky. He hit 2 trees, both of them were front impact and the airbag only deployed after the truck came to a stand still and about 6 sec. after the crash. He was not traveling at a high rate of speed. The truck desinagrated in front of my eyes. He died from blunt force trauma to the head and chest. It was a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 single cab with a flat bed. The engine was in the cab of the truck when it was all over. So I am happy that most of you made it through without losing your lives but my husband was not so lucky and now I have 2 boys that don’t have a father nor do I have a husband.
